Akaroa Wastewater Update

Public consultation has begun for the Akaroa Wastewater Scheme and will run from July 21- August 23. We encourage people to begin preparing a personal submission. Collect a consultation booklet from the old Robinsons Bay Post Office, Brent Schulz in Takamatua, Council Service Centres or visit the CCC website. Friends of Banks Peninsula are currently compiling a comprehensive submission detailing a more future looking and resilient solution. We welcome you to draw on our ideas to make your own submission and to lend support to ours - we intend to release our submission by August 7.

The consultation presents four possible options - three land based in the Inner Bays, Goughs Bay or Pompeys Pillar - all involving large storage ponds and irrigation to planted native trees - and the harbour outfall.

The Council favours the Inner Bays irrigation with the storage pond and most of the irrigation in Robinsons Bay. The scheme also involves irrigation at Hammond Point and the Takamatua flats and a constructed wetland at the top of the Old Coach Road above Akaroa able to release water to Childrens Bay when the Robinsons Bay storage pond is full.

Purple Pipe re-use will be offered with each option, but at a high extra cost and limited to parks and public toilets in Akaroa.

Friends of Banks Peninsula is extremely concerned about the high social and environmental risk and impacts - particularly of the Inner Bays scheme. We are concerned that the Council has not taken a more holistic approach and that these schemes do not address the high levels of storm and ground water infiltration into the Akaroa network, nor Akaroa's problem of summer water shortages.  We are working hard to put forward a more future looking and resilient solution in our submission.
